The article analyses the problems of origin and etymology of the Alanian names of the Zelenčuk inscription. The author puts forward some new solutions on the base of Iranian studies data.

The article analyses the evolution of imperial legislation in the field of confessional relations, and contradictoriness of governmental religious policy over the reforms and counter-reforms in the second half of XIX‑XX century as well. Author concludes that the main principle of the Russian empire’s confessional policy was an aspiration to the total state controls over all religious institutions all-over the country, without any exception.

In the article the role of the Russian Moslems in geopolitical confrontation on the Eve of and during the World War I is analyzed on the base of the sources which were not introduced in science before. A situation in the North Caucasian borderland of the Russian Empire is analyzed. The data on the other regions of the domestic Orient is attracted as analogies.

The article is devoted to the public health problems in the North Caucasus in XIX – early XX century. The objective and subjective factors that influenced on the formation of the medical institutions are considered. The lifts of the formation of the medical intelligentsia are determined. The dynamics of the development of a network of public health, medical services, and medical science in the region is shown. The causes of the negative demographic trends are investigated.

The article deals with a specificity of dissemination of the special military units (such as mountain infantry) and other companies in the fighting for the North Caucasus in 1942‑1943 in the mountainous country.

Professor Vassili Abaev, a renowned linguist, published his «Historical-Etymological Dictionary of the Ossetic language» in four volumes (1958-1989). The Dictionary is most informative as an invaluable source of reference for scholars and students who are interested in Ossetic studies. The author of the article presents the marginalia on the Dictionary with addenda et emendanda. This article will be continued.

The article investigates the problem of the origin of Ossetian verb by comparative analysis of past and present tense verb stems in Iron and Digoron dialects, as well as Old Iranian languages. To a detailed analysis is subjected the system of preverbs, which perform species-generating functions, have the meaning of completed action and possess similarities to the verbal systems of other Iranian languages.

The intrinsic religiosity of Kosta Khetagurov combining Ossetian traditional religion and Christianity is considered in the article as a special type, that derives its justification in the framework of the teachings of «dialogism» put forward by M. M. Bakhtin, where the key role is played by the concept of «bivoiced word».

In the article authors investigate ways and methods of art searches of one of the most remarkable Ossetian writers of the 20th century Dabe Mamsurov, define features of his creativity, his innovation and achievements in the sphere of formation of art character in the Ossetian literature. So, in particular, authors open features of a character formation of the writer in tragedies «Afkhardta Hassan’s», «Leader Bagatar», novels «Akhsarbeg» and «Poem of heroes».

Thus it is noted that in the tragedies D. Mamsurov claims a thought that the person is given right to be free, to be happy, and to love. In his novels the writer creates an idea of novelistic type of character as the generalized art phenomenon in which in the form of the single the general is expressed.

The symbol «road» has a special significance in the system of metaphorical thinking. From the space and time point of view it has some features, affecting all genres of folklore. This article discusses the types of roads presented in Ossetian Narta epos; it analyzes plot-founding value of the meeting character and the patron of the road. Particular attention is paid to the sustainable folk formulas with the semantics of the road.

This article focuses on the image of Farnham, on etymology and semantics of this concept in the traditional culture of Ossetians. The author presents the musical style characteristics of wedding songs, united by Farnham image, and reveals some patterns of their execution context.

The article analyzes the social and political situation in the North Caucasus in 1920s throw the prism of the local peasantry’s reflections on the events. Basing on the study of documents the authors conclude that the form of social protests may be divided on spontaneous and organized, sanctioned and unsanctioned by authority, individual and group, masked and open, adapted, etc. In the North Caucasus the protest forms were characterized with special acuteness because of both the peculiarities of the social structure and gross errors of the local power. The authors publish the documents on this issue.

This article analyzes the social history and cultural heritage of the Russian Diasporas in Turkey. The important segment of it is the North Caucasian Diaspora, for studying of which the author engages the memories of one of its member, the ossetian emigrant Temirbolat Kubatiev. The author presents the excerpts from his memories, who was in the past a participant of the “White” movement and anti-Soviet underground in the North Caucasus. This fragment narrates about his first years in Turkey, were he arrived in the end of 1922.

This review is on the T. Murtazov’s monograph on the translation of the Zelenčuk inscription in Abkhazian-Abaza language. Analyzing the ways of translation by Murtazov and his research methods the reviewer improves insolvency of the author’s interpretation of the inscription’s signs and incompetence of the author’s approach to the one of the most difficult for interpretation epigraphic monument.

This article is about a new book of A. Tskhurbaeva “From my memories of Vaso”. This book is about V.I. Abaev, an outstanding linguist, known as the researcher of the Ossetian language. The reviewer acquaints with the structure and content of the book, narrates about the author, notes warmth of the Tskhurbaeva’s memories.

This essay is about some academic events in the NOIHSS activities, the most important of which was an agreement on cooperation with one of the oldest Italian universities – State University of Macerata.
