The magazine of ”Izvestiya SOIGSI” is a periodical edition of the V.I. Abaev North-Ossetian Institute for Humanitarian and Social Studies of Vladikavkaz Scientific Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences and the Government of North Ossetia-Alania. Its history reflects the main tendencies of the Humanities’ development in Ossetia.

The idea of a magazine was appertained to the Ossetian Historic and Philological Society that was a first scientific institution in the North Caucasus. This society became a basis for the Institute, and in June 1925 the first issue of “Izvestiya osetinskogo nauchno-issledovatel’skogo instituta kraevedeniya” (“Proceedings of the Ossetian Scientific Institute for Study of Local Lore”) was printed. In the annual the materials on the Ossetian folklore, literature, history, ethnography, art, and archive documents were published. At all the 31 issues of the “Izvestiya” concerning the complex questions of historic and philological Ossetian studies was printed.

The formed tradition was interrupted by the decision of the Committee on Press of RSFSR on the ban on publishing of peripheral scientific journals. It was recommended to the all regional institutions to begin publishing thematic collected articles on the different brunches of humanities. The last collected articles had a number 39, and so the first issue of the edition renewed in 2007th was marked as issue 1(40).

It is actually to research the problems on the traditional culture and its interaction with the Russian and world religious and cultural systems; carry out the historic and contrastive analysis of language, mythology and folklore of the Iranian, and North-Caucasian peoples as well; study the variant aspects of the artistic culture; carry out the genealogical and gender researches; analyze the interethnic and inter-confessional relations, as well as the processes of social transformation in a wide chronological diapason; monitor the social, economic and ethno-political situation in the region. In this edition the tradition of printing the sources and putting into scientific using the richest funds of the NOIHSS Science Archive will continue.
